Types of Dental Sedation: IV, Oral, and Nitrous Oxide

Not all sedation is the same. Understanding the three main types helps you and your dentist choose the level of comfort that matches your needs and the procedure ahead.
Nitrous Oxide
Often called laughing gas, nitrous oxide provides light, fast-acting relaxation that wears off within minutes. It is ideal for mild anxiety and routine procedures, and you can usually drive yourself home afterward.
Oral Sedation
Taken as a pill before your appointment, oral sedation produces a deeper sense of calm. You remain awake but relaxed and drowsy, with reduced awareness of the procedure. An escort home is required.
IV Sedation
Delivered intravenously, IV sedation offers the deepest relaxation and is ideal for complex procedures or significant anxiety. Its effects are precisely controlled and most patients remember little of the visit.
